WHY AN APP?

The Arctic is in danger and melting at a frightening rate, plastic is one of the main culprits. "EVERY MINUTE, 300,000 Coca-Cola + Nestlé plastic bottles are produced (source: Break Free From Plastic), the manufacturing of each emitting an average of 82g of CO₂ (Carbon Trust). And with only 9% recycled, the rest pollutes for 450 years. These emissions accelerate the melting of the ice pack twice as fast as the global average:
“1 tonne of CO₂ melts ≈ 4–6 m³ of Arctic ice.”
(Notz & Stroeve, Science 2016, NASA JPL 2023, UCL).
The consequences are dramatic:
• 26,000 polar bears are in danger (WWF Arctic Report 2024)
• The ice pack has lost 40% of its volume since 1980 (NSIDC 2023)
• Inuit peoples are seeing their habitat and culture disappear.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

When you scan a product, you learn about its environmental impact and can choose a more sustainable alternative. This simple act sends a powerful, immediate data point to the company.
The Real Impact:
• Each scan is a signal. It tells companies, "I am a conscious consumer, and I am watching my plastic footprint."
• Data drives change. Widespread scanning creates a massive dataset that proves consumer demand for sustainable products. This is what ultimately pressures companies to invest in better packaging and reduce their overall carbon footprint.
• Recycling helps. Recycling a bottle instead of throwing it away has a lower carbon footprint. While the exact savings vary, studies estimate that recycling a plastic bottle can avoid an average of [Note 1] ~15-25g of CO₂ compared to making a new one from virgin materials. Collective Power:

• Yuka, a popular scanning app, saw over 2 million daily scans in 2019 (Source: Interview with CEO Julie Chapon). This kind of data is impossible for corporations to ignore.
The Big Picture:
Reducing plastic production and switching to recycled materials is a proven way to cut CO₂ emissions. On a global scale, this is essential to fight climate change and protect vulnerable ecosystems like the Arctic.
